
Integrated efforts a must to remove water logging Dredging of Karnaphuli river stressed

Engineers, city planners and eminent citizens in a colloquium on Tuesday observed that unplanned urbanization, poor drainage system, indiscriminate dumping of wastages and no step for dredging the river Karnaphuli over the last few years are the main causes of severe water-lodging in the city. They laid special emphasis on coordinated endeavors of all utility service agencies particularly Chittagong City Corporation and Chittagong Development Authority to free the city people from the curse of the water-lodging permanently.
They urged the government to dredge river Karnaphuli immediately for saving Chittagong from water-lodging. Forum for Planned Chittagong organized the colloquium " Water logging in Chittagong" was held at Engineers Institution's conference room to hammer out the ways and means for overcoming the long-standing problems.

Five customs officials face punitive action

Chittagong Customs House on Tuesday reportedly sent a recommendation letter to National Board of Revenue to suspend two customs officials including an office assistant apart from transferring two other officials on charge their involvement in corruption.
Principal Appraiser Abdul Basid, Appraiser AKM Mazharul Islam and Office Assistant Sawkat Karim Khan Rana were included in the recommendation letter for immediate suspension.
Meanwhile, two other officials - Principal Appraiser Mizanur Rahman and Appraiser Mozammel Haque were also recommended to transfer for their involvement in assisting a company to import good on false declaration.

Enterprise in capital city Dhaka imported 303 cartons of second hands photo copiers in the name of Computer Accessories in last December.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) later seized the imported photo copiers in Dhaka. At that time, RAB personnel visited Chittagong Customs House for three times and interrogated dozens of top officials. The security men also seized important document during the drive.
The security men attempts to pick up ten officials in connection with the incident. Later, Customs authority urged the security men to handover them in the custody of Customs Commissioner.

Fire at Chakaria : valuables worth Tk. 1 millon gutted

Valuables worth TK one million were gutted and three houses reduced to ashes in an inferno that broke out at village Palakata in Chokoria upazila on Monday.
The fire had originated from wood-run oven at the kitchen room of a house owned by Abdul Sukkur at about 2:30 p.m.

Govt keen to strengthen tiers Local govt, says CA

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Tuesday said his caretaker government wants to strengthen the local government to ensure transparency and accountability and also to reach its services to the people's doorsteps. Addressing the top civil bureaucrats at the Cabinet Division conference room in the morning, he informed that a high-powered experts committee formed earlier would submit its recommendations next month on strengthening the structure of local government in the country.

Bush to Musharraf :Hold election, sever ties with military

The United States has urged Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to sever his links with the military and reinstate civilian rule. "Our hope is that he will restore democracy as quickly as possible," U.S. President George W. Bush said Monday after a White House meeting with Turkey's prime minister.
Musharraf's government will discuss a timetable for parliamentary elections Tuesday, Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said in a a report from The Associated Press.
Aziz made the comments as the U.S. and other Western allies stepped up pressure on the army chief to return to the path of democracy. Some said they were reviewing aid to the Muslim nation.
