Saint Martin visit results in tragedy

A tourist died of cardiac arrest during a visit to Saint Martin Island in Cox'sbazar yesterday. The victim was identified as Misbahuddin (40), son of one Hazi Shamsul Islam of Narsingdh district. Sources said, Misbahuddin, a trader in Dhaka were going on a trip along with three friends to Saint Martin Island in a sea truck.
Passenger with huge foreign currency detained at airport

Custom officials at Shah Amanat International Airport (SAIA) on Friday seized huge foreign currencies (FC) from a China-bound Bangladeshi passenger's possession.
The airport security personnel in association with Custom officials detained the passenger - Abdul Halim Selim- just before departure, airport sources said.
He is the son of Abdul Karim, a resident of Enayet Bazar area in the city. The recovered foreign currencies are US$ 13,500, 3000 Thai Bath, 600 Chinese Yen and 2000 Swiss Franks which estimated at Taka 10 lakh and 60 thousand.
Chief Preventive Officer, Airport Customs Monjurul Karim told the reporters that the recovered foreign currencies were deposited to the customs custody and detainee was handed over to Patenga police station.
Cox's Bazar’s salt can meet national demand

Salt, mostly produced in beach-town Cox's Bazar, is one of the major contributing sectors of country's economy. Salt produced in Cox's Bazar and Banshkhali are virtually addressing the national demand. Salt is currently producing at 70,000 acres of land in Moheshkhali, Kutubdia, Cox's bazaar Sadar, Chakaria, Pekua and Teknaf. Salt producers claimed that the salt which had been producing in those areas is addressing the national demand.
2 students of Meron Sun School drowned in Cox's Bazar sea

Two schoolboys drowned on Friday afternoon in the Bay while taking bath in Cox'sbazar Sea with their classmates as part of annual excursion.
The ill-fated students are Hannan Washim (15) and Shafiul Hossain (14). Both the students went to Cox's Bazar along with 91 students of Meron Sun School and College located in port the city.
Both are students of class eight. Police and witnesses said that Hannan, son of Abdul Hannan of Doulatpur village in Fatikchhari upazila, drowned and his friend Shafiul Hossain, son of Syed Hossain of Dewanhat in the port city of Chittagong, went missing as they were swimming in the sea.
Malaysia to lift embargo on Bangladeshi workers 100,000 to leave for KL

Malaysian government may consider the lifting of embargo on fresh recruitment of Bangladeshi workers once problems recently caused by unscrupulous agents are resolved. Talking to UNB at his residence today (Friday), Malaysian High Commissioner in Dhaka Abdul Malek Bin Abdul Aziz said the Malaysian government has been taking measures to address the problems recently faced by the Bangladeshi workers on their arrival at Kuala Lumpur. The measures include the concerned companies will have to pick up Bangladeshi workers within 70-72 hours of their arrival at Kuala Lumpur airport. Besides, before the workers' departure from Dhaka, they will have to get the "confirmation" from their respective companies in Malaysia.

Benazir house arrest

Pakistani police placed opposition leader Benazir Bhutto under house arrest Friday, uncoiling barbed wire in front of her Islamabad villa, and reportedly rounded up 5,000 of her supporters to block a mass protest against emergency rule. Bhutto tried to leave by car but was blocked by police after a scuffle with her supporters who tried to remove a barricade. The former prime minister had planned to address a rally in nearby Rawalpindi, defying a ban on public gatherings. Kamal Shah, a top Interior Ministry official, said a district magistrate had served a "detention order" on Bhutto - who last month escaped assassination by suicide bombers - so she could not leave her home. However, speaking by phone from the scene, Bhutto said that no arrest papers had been served on her.
