Woe remains woe! Repeated plea of city commuters and transport owners to bring back smooth shape of city streets remained unheeded doubling miseries of the city dwellers apart from transport owners.
The dilapidated condition of the city roads, subsequent outcome of recent heavy showers, in one hand, slowed down communication system, on the other hand, transport owners are to count additional money for repairing purposes of vehicles.

SC rejects govt plea for leave appeal against Mohiuddin

Dhaka, Nov 11 (UNB)
The Supreme Court Sunday turned down government plea for leave to appeal against High Court orders that had discharged two corruption cases against detained Chittagong City Corporation Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
After hearing both sides, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice M Ruhul Amin passed the order rejecting the government's leave-to-appeal petition.

Power supply in Ctg to suspend for 3 days

Most of the areas in Chittagong region are likely to plunge into darkness for approximately 72 hours as power supply will either fully or partially be suspended due to partial generation in Raozan Thermal Power and Shikolbaha Power Plants for next three consecutive days from Tuesday.
These two power plants will go for full or partial shutdown for lack of adequate gas supply from November 13 (6:00 am) to November 15 (7:00 p.m.) due to installation of the new transmission system in gas pipe line.

National media policy sought

Media professionals, academics, editors and journalists at a seminar on Sunday laid special emphasis on formulating an immediate national policy for both print and electronic media to ensure standard of journalism as well as overcoming the crisis prevails in the profession.
In the absence of a policy guideline, many newspapers are being published in name only with non-professionals at their helm which hinders responsible journalism, they said.
Organised by Bangladesh Centre for Development, Journalism and Communication (BCDJC) with the support from UNESCO Bangladesh the seminar on "Independence and Pluralism in local Media "at the conference room of the hotel Silver Spoon.

10 killed, 57 injured in road crashes in four districts


Dhaka, Nov 11 (UNB)
At least ten people were killed and 57 injured in road accidents in Jessore, Bogra, Mymensingh and Netrakona districts Saturday night-Sunday. In Jessore, At least five people were killed and 30 others injured as a bus crashed into a roadside ditch at Ghadkhali in Jhikargaccha upazila on Saturday night. Former UP member Shariful Islam of Krishnagar, Imroj, Mintoo, Abbas and an unidentified woman aged about 30 died in the fatal accident. Police said the Jessore-bound bus from Benapole rammed into a roadside tree and swerved off the road into a ditch as the driver lost control over the steering at about 9pm. Two died on the spot and three on way to Jessore General Hospital. Condition of the 12 others admitted to the hospital was stated "critical".

Knitwear exports recovered : BKMEA

Knitwear export is likely to be affected in future due to slow investments in the sector at present, although there are signs of growth-pace recovery from political fallout.
Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) forewarned of the negative consequence of investment here today (Sunday), seeking government intervention in reducing interest rate on bank loans to encourage investment.

Endless conflict has helped the army stay in lucrative control since Pakistan was born

President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's declaration of emergency rule was not the first time the army has demonstrated its supremacy in Pakistan. It is also unlikely to be the last. The imposition of a state of emergency one week ago has put the prospect of the world's second-largest Muslim nation making a democratic breakthrough into cold storage.
And analysts caution that Pakistan's position on the front line of America's war on terror and the army's increasing involvement in the economy suggest the generals are well-equipped to defend their privileges.
