
Spl. Court rejects bail prayer of Mohiuddin

A court here on Monday rejected the bail prayer of Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Alhaj ABM Moihuddin Chowdhury and asked him with two other accused of the graft case to appear before the court in person on November 29 .
The court at the same time issued arrest warrant against Chief Engineer of CCC Moktar Alam and asked to attach his all assets immediately. Lawyers in the hearing of the case prayed bail of Mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury but the judge SM Solaiman of Chittagong Divisional Special Court turned down the bail petition and asked him to appear before the court on November 29.
Strengthening Ctg- Kunming ties stressed
Participants at a meeting of high powered Chinese delegation and executives of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industry emphasized the need of reinforcing ties between China and Bangladesh for achieving better economic as well
as GDP growth, said a press release.
This was disclosed at a view exchange session at the auditorium of CCC&I yesterday.

No salvage operation yet: Death toll rose to 5

The death toll in Sunday's trawler capsize in the Bay off Teknaf coast now rose to five with recovery of four bodies on Sunday. Eighteen floating bodies were counted by the fishermen and onlookers in and around BNP Ghona. Another ill fated Kashimullah reached the shore floating from the place of occurrence.
Kalimullah a fisherman after returning from the deep sea informed the locals that he had counted as many as eigteen bodies , some six km off Teknaf coast .
No measures for recovery of the bodies are visible let alone rescue operation for the capsized trawlers after a lapse of 36 hours as administration is apparently found idle .
Teknaf police failed to arrest anybody but only is confined to lodge a case on charges of killing and fraud in this connection.

A day long education fair with a basic commitment for extending education, and health among the poor rural people concluded at city's Engineers Institution on Monday.
The fair organized by the BGC Trust drew a huge crowds mostly interested students of university, medical science and their guardians.
Vice-Chancellor of the BGC Trust University Bangladesh Prof Nurul Mustafa formally inaugurated the fair as chief guest amidst cutting ribbon .
Later the Vice chancellor flanked by faculty members went round different stalls set up in the fair.
Construction labour electrocuted in city

A middle-aged person was electrocuted at city's Baluchora area under Baizid police station on hours before dawn Monday.
The victim was identified as Mohammad Rustom Ali. He was a construction worker and son of Joinal Ali, hailed from Rongpur, police said.

Better Business Forum floated

The interim administration has unveiled a 38-strong high-profile Better Business Forum to boost the private sector in a move hailed by businesses.
Chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed heads the body styled Bangladesh Better Business Forum (BBBF), designed to maintain institutional relations with the private sector, a notification by the Chief Advisor's Office said Monday.
The forum has been rolled out amid reports that low business confidence has put strains on economy over past few months.
Representatives from both the government and the private sector are members of the high-profile forum, it said.

2007 most critical year for Bangladesh: Hua Du

The Asian Development Bank's country director has said Bangladesh is going through the most critical and challenging year in its 36-year existence.
"Really, the country is heading towards difficulties following the floods and the devastating cyclones," Hua Du told reporters Monday at the launch of Quarterly Economic Update on Bangladesh.
"I'm here for about five and a half years and I'm linked to this country since its independence," said Du in the bank's Dhaka office, "but I have never sensed such difficulties the country is going to face this year."

SC cancels Hasina's bail, trial to begin

The Supreme Court Monday cancelled Sheikh Hasina's bail granted by the High Court in a case that charges her with taking Tk 3 crore in bribe from a power company during her days as prime minister and using it to buy a building for Bangabandhu Memorial Trust. The apex court also halted the High Court freeze on the proceedings of the case, clearing way for trial to go on in lower court.
