Killing, Kidnapping, mugging on rise, city dwellers panicked

Residents of Chittagong city are gripped with the chill of fear as snatching, mugging and kidnapping especially of wealthy businessmen continued to be committed in a serial. The extremely fragile law and order in Chittagong particularly in combating crime has, of late literally gone fugitive as most residents do not venture out of their homes, not even for morning walk. Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Moinur Rahman Chowdhury himself admitted that snatching incidents are on the rise since last couple of weeks .

Kidnapping of businessman Mozaffar shrouded in mystry

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) is still in dark about whereabouts of the abducted businessman Mozaffar Ahmed as they have no precise information. "Only Almighty Allah can say whether he is alive or dead " said CMP commissioner Moinur Rahman Chowdhury while asked about the latest development of the abduction .

Prices of spices shot up ahead of Eid

Prices of different spices both in retail and whole sale market have registered sharp ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul -Ajha. A spot visit to city's Kazir Dewory market found the shop owners selling all spices at a higher rate . The price of edible oil is likely to increase further at any time as there is a shortage of enough supply in the market, according to the traders.
During the Eid- ul - Ajha different kinds of spices are essential for cooking delicious dishes of sacrificial animals . Consumers are trying to store spices for the religious occasion.

CNG auto rickshaws to be brought under metering system : CMP commissioner

Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Moinur Rahman Chowdhury categorically said that CNG driven auto rickshaws owners are not above the law of land
" If CNG auto rickshaws owners are not brought under the prepaid metering system the plying must be stopped if necessary city residents would walk on foot " warned CMP Commissioner. The warning and rigid stance of the police came when CMP commissioner was asked in an opinion exchange meeting with the journalists at CMP conference room .

One imprisoned for life term

A Chittagong court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to imprisonment for life and fined TK 20,000 for throwing acid on his wife .
Metropolitan Session Judge, Anowar Hossain pronounced the verdict.The convict was identified as Sowar Alam Mridha, son of Manik Mia, hailed from Sharonkhala under Bagerhat District. The prosecution story is in brief that Sarowar demanded dowry from his wife Ayesha Akhter for long after got married to his wife .

Tax-friendly atmosphere to be created: Mazid

The new chief of the National Board of Revenue, Muhammad Abdul Mazid, announced his plan to create an investment, business and tax-friendly atmosphere in the country under a knowledge-based tax administration. "I want to establish an investment, business and tax- friendly atmosphere in the country," the NBR chairman told a meeting with businesses at the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Wednesday.

Abbas-Olmart pledge agreement in one year

Palestinian police loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday fired shots in the air and beat protesters with sticks during the funeral of a man killed during a protest against this week's U.S.-hosted Mideast peace summit. At least 26 people were wounded, one critically, medics said.It was the second straight day of violence stemming from theconference in Annapolis, Maryland, where Abbas and Israeli PrimeMinister Ehud Olmert formally agreed to relaunch peace talk and pledged to reach an agreement within one year. Some 5,000 people participated in Wednesday's funeral procession for Hisham Baradei, 36, who was shot in the chest Tuesday during a demonstration against the Annapolis conference.

Japan's opposition passes bill to halt air force's mission in Iraq

Japan's upper house of parliament voted Wednesday to halt the country's air force transport mission in Iraq, intensifying the opposition bloc's standoff with the government over Tokyo's role in peacekeeping missions abroad. The opposition-controlled upper house approved the Democratic Party of Japan's bill to halt the mission in a vote of 133-103 during a plenary session. However, the legislation is expected to be voted down when it goes to the more powerful lower house, where the ruling Liberal Democratic Party has enough votes to override the upper chamber's decision.
