Charge framing in Bijoy TV graft case deferred

The charge-framing in the Bijoy TV graft case could not be held on Thursday as the principal accused, detained Chittagong City Corporation mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, was not produced before the court.
Judge of Divisional Speedy Trial court SM Solaiman fixed December 4 as next date for charge framing and again ordered to produce the CCC Mayor in person on the day.
Deputy Director of local Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Abul Kalam Azad last week submitted the charge sheet against CCC Mayor and two high officials accusing that they misappropriated Tk 80 lakh in the name of setting up private channel Bijoy TV.

One hanged in Ctg jail for killing wife, daughter

One NGO worker was sentenced to death by hanging Chittagong Jail at zero hours on charge of slaughtering wife and daughter.
Abdur Rashid and Belal Hossain executed the death sentence in presence of jail super Afaur Rahman deputy commissioner Mohammad Ashraf Shamim.
The capital punishment was warded to Paritosh Ruddro (40) an inhabitant of Patiya upazila of the district.

Railway Engr suspended

Authorities of Bangladesh Railway (eastern zone) put one sub-assistant engineer on temporary suspension in connection with a fire incident in Pahartali railway workshop on Thursday.
Abdus Salam has been suspended for his alleged negligence of duty in the fire incident. Meanwhile, the authority has constituted a -two member committee to probe the incident.

United Hospital opens medicare information centre in Chittagong

The United Hospital Ltd. Dhaka, a multidisciplinary world class hospital has formally opened its Chittagong information centre at city's M M Ali road near Gol Pahar circle on Thursday.
The patients of the greater Chittagong from now on will have access to all kinds of information of the hospital from the newly opened centre, members of the board of directors and physicians of the hospital told this at an inauguration cum press briefing function held at Hotel Peninsula.

Democracy can't function under a dictatorial political party: Mainul

UNB,Dhaka

Echoing the remarks of the Chief Election Commissioner, Law Advisor Barrister Mainul Hosein Thursday said the government must see whether or not constitution of a political party is democratic as a lack of it spelt doom for democracy in the country.
Talking to reporters, he observed that absence of democracy inside a political party is one of the reasons that failed democracy in the country.

Govt not happy with ADP implementation

UNB, Dhaka

The caretaker government is not happy with the implementation rate of Annual Development Programme (ADP) in the first quarter of the current 2007-08 fiscal year, apparently for certain adversities.
Finance Adviser Dr Mirza Azizul Islam apprised journalists of the situation after a reappraisal of the development budget in a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council Thursday.

Combined efforts to bring better life for cyclone-hit people: CA

NKorea to submit draft nuclear declaration soon

AP, Seoul

North Korea is finalizing a declaration of its nuclear programs to meet a commitment to reveal everything about its decades-old pursuit of atomic bombs, the main U.S. negotiator at international arms talks said Thursday.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill said he would talk about the declaration with North Korean officials during a visit there starting Monday.

Bush encourages Israeli-Palestinian leaders’ peace mission

President George W. Bush has assured the leaders of Israel and the Palestinian territories he is committed personally to their mission of peace and urged them to stick with it and not lose sight of their goal. Bush met separately Wednesday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at the White House, and then with the two men jointly before the trio emerged for a presidential send-off from the Rose Garden. The stagecraft capped three days of U.S.-sponsored diplomacy centered on an international Middle East peace conference held Tuesday in Annapolis, Maryland. "No matter how important yesterday was, it's not nearly as important as tomorrow and the days beyond," Bush said, with Olmert on one side and Abbas on the other.
