December 5 1971: Month of Victory

in the month of victory

Pakistani soldiers mental strength broke down by combined attacks of Mukti Bahini and allied forces

Samir Kanti Barua

Today is the 5th day of the month of victory in the liberation war of Bangladesh against the vicious Pakistani occupation forces.
5th December in 1971 was Sunday and is considered as a landmark in the history of Liberation War as freedom loving people of Bangladesh roared with their utmost strength and potentiality in the backdrop of the counter attacks by the Pak forces.
But Pakistani forces were retreated by the intense attack with heroic and courageous war yielded by the Mukti Bahini and Allied forces which later captured Akhaura.
The significance of Akhaura war is immense in the liberation war as enemy forces could stand nowhere after cruel defeat in this war in which 160 Pak soldiers were killed .
The Panjabi soldiers lost their mental strength
in the face of combined attack by the East Bengal Regiment number -2 which is one of the   oldest regiments in the Pakistan army .
The then Second -in -command Major Safiullah and subsequently former chief of Bangladesh army from this battalion announced war against Pakistan.
Major Matiur Rahman, Captain Murshed, Lieutenant Ibrahim, Lieutenant Badiuzzaman and lieutenant Salim were among who took part in the Akhaura war as stated by valiant freedom fighter Major M S Bhuiyan in his book “   Nine months in the Liberation War” .
As part of the international support the then USSR proposed a proposal in the UN security council stating that a political solution is a must to come to an end the existing war that persists in East Pakistan.
The proposal further said that the worsening situation that resulted from atrocious Pakistani attack must immediately  end . Poland is the lone country which endorsed the proposal . All members of the security council excepting China refrained from voting.
China which got permanent membership of the council 40 years ago was the first who gave veto against proposal.
According to book “Muldhara -71 written by eminent author Moidul Hasan said another proposal for ceasefire and pulling down of Pakistani forced was also placed in the meting by eight other countries.
The Times in its  issue on December , 6 , 1971 wrote “ The Soviet Government also believes that the government of all countries should refrain from steps signifying in this or that way their involvement in the conflict and leading to a further aggravation of the situation in the Hindustan Peninsula.
In the country on 5th December, Kotchandpur on the Jessore- Kushtia railway was captured cutting the  railway track. Without rest, the column pushed northwards and by the 7th it had advanced another 30 km to capture Jenidah ( a vital communication centre) thus cutting the road link .
On the same day, Jessore was vacated by the enemy who pulled out helter- skelter for Magura (on the Modhumati) .The subsequent capture of Meherpur opened the way to Chuadanga and Kushtia
Salam Azad in his book” Contribution of India in the War of Liberation of Bangladesh wrote “ The evacuation of Jessore provided one instance of the  degeneration of Pakistan army. This stronghold was defended by an infantry brigade group supported by tanks and artillery of some 5,000 men. It was one of the most strongly fortified positions in Bangladesh, the headquarters of Pakistan’s 9 infantry division . Yet when the time came to fight, the whole garrison turned tail and ran .
In the words of Philip Jacobson of the Sunday Times “The total collapse of the Pakistani army‘s resistance in Jessore is one of the most intriguing puzzles of the war in the east.
Diplomatic efforts to recognize Bangladesh and its government by India is on the card.

Benazir, Sharif to set joint demands

AP, Islamabad

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's politician brother faced possible arrest Tuesday over murder charges dating back to 1998 after both brothers were excluded from upcoming parliamentary elections.
