Silent killers slay at least 10 persons a year

At least ten persons including lawyer, two inspectors of Customs and BRTA, journalist’s brother and student were murdered by the much talked “silent killers” using CNG driven auto rickshaw in Chittagong city in the last one year.
A band of fifteen members unarmed silent killers led by kingpin Al Amin Gazi commit the dreadful offence which smeared the image of the army backed care- taker government shortly after it assumed power in January 11 .
The band of the silent killers, perpetrate to assassination by using gamcha, a handloom made napkin and electrical cable or wire travelling in the auto rickshaw just not to leave any marks or sign behind the killing .
CNG auto rickshaw crashed by train at wireless crossing

Three passengers and a driver were narrowly escaped from major accident at Pahatoli wireless colony rail crossing near Holy Crescent Hospital in Khulshi when a train crashed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw this morning.
An insensible attempt of assistant Commissioner (Kotwali) was responsible for the incident where the CNG driver injured. Eyewitnesses said that the police officer stopped the CNG-run auto-rickshaw (Chatta-metro-tha-12-4986) on the railway track at about 10:00 to check meter.
4 JMB militants to serve 14 yrs RI

A Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal here on Tuesday sentenced four JMB militants to 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment for possessing explosives.
The court also fined TK 5,000 each, in default to suffer three years more in prison.
The convicts are Javed Iqbal alias Mohammad, commander of Chittagong Division of the banned Jama’tul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), its Cox’s Bazar district commander Naimuzzaman Babu, explosives expert Abu Zar alias Ayub Ali, and cadre Zahidul Islam Sumon.
Lengra gahangir held AK-47, recovered

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a raid at village Brahmmnpara of Raojan upazila detained a close aide to BNP leader Salauddin Kader Chowdhury and recovered an AK-47 with 75 rounds of bullet and three magazines from his possession.
The detainee was identified as Mohammed Jahangir alias Lengra Jahangir.
The RAB men also recovered 75 rounds of bullet and three magazines.
Staff Officer of the RAB-7 headquarters Sheikh Sariful Islam told the reporters that they conducted the raid in the area at about 9:00 a.m. Tuesday and detained Jahangir from his residence.
ACC file case against forest officer Tapan

Chittagong Divisional wing of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday filed a case against Divisional Forest Officer Dr. Tapan Kumar Dhar for being failed to submit his wealth statement to the ACC.
The ACC filed the case with city’s Double-mooring police station.

2.5 million perform hajj
Arafat, Saudi Arabia, Dec 18 Reuters) - Muslim pilgrims poured on to the plain of Arafat east of Makka on Tuesday as the sun rose over the rocky hills for the day marking the climax of the annual hajj pilgrimage.
They came on foot, by bus and in pick-up trucks from Mina and other sites in the direction of Makka, adding to a throng which reached more than 2 million in the afternoon.
Saudi authorities say more than 1.6 million people have entered Saudi Arabia for the event, the largest religious gathering in the world.
CA leaves Mina for Arafat Maidan

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed left Mina on yesterday morning for Arafat Maidan to perform the main rituals of Hajj, which took place later in the day.
Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed and other members of the CA’s entourage also left for the main venue of pilgrimage in the morning, according to a message received here this (Monday) afternoon, UNB reports from Dhaka.
SC stays HC bail to Sigma Huda, Helal

The Supreme Court yesterday stayed High Court-granted bail to convicted prisoners Sigma Huda, wife of jailed former communications minister Nazmul Huda, and Barrister Mir Helal Uddin, son of jailed former state minister for civil aviation and tourism Mir Nasir.

Japan intercepts missile in space from ship off Hawaii

The Japanese military destroyed a mid-range ballistic missile in space with an interceptor fired from a ship off Hawaii in a test on Monday.
The U.S. military has conducted similar successful tests in the past, but it is the first time a U.S. ally has shot down a ballistic missile from a ship at sea.
The interceptor fired by the JS Kongo knocked out the target warhead about 100 miles (160 kilometers) above the Pacific Ocean, said the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, which carried out the test together with the Japanese and U.S. navies.
Insurgents behead village chief in Thailand

Suspected Islamic militants fatally shot four people Tuesday then beheaded one of them, a Muslim village chief, in Thailand's insurgency-wracked south, police said.
At least 10 insurgents opened fire on the chief's vehicle, killing him and three security guards, as they drove through Bannang Sata district in Yala province, said police Lt. Sompien Eksomya.
"The village chief was beheaded and his severed head was found near the crime scene and the rest of the bodies," Sompien said.
