Weather may remain dry with partly cloudy sky over the country in the next 24 hours till 6pm today (Monday).
Light to moderate fog may occur over the river basins of the country during early morning and slight rise in night temperature is expected, Met Office said.
Country's highest temperature 27.2 degree Celsius was recorded yesterday at Khepupara and Cox’s Bazar and lowest 8.6 degrees at Srimongal.
The sun sets today (Monday) at 5:13 pm and rises on Tuesday at 6:34 am.

Eid vacation hangover still prevalent

The port city is still reeling under the Eid hangover despite three day eid vacation ends   amidst reopening of the offices on Sunday.
Attendances in all government, semi government, autonomous bodies and other establishments were thin.
The officers and supporting staff that were   present on the opening day were found exchanging eid greetings side by side carrying out limited scale activities.
However, picture in banking establishments was quite different as all nationalized, scheduled and private banks dealt brisk business in the closing month of the year.

Panel projection meeting of Ctg Samity held

A projection meeting of `Jahangir-Zakaria’ panel of Dhaka-based Chittagong Samity centering ensuing general election of the Samity schedulted on December 29 next was held at Chittagong Club auditorium on Saturday. General Secretary of the Trustee Board of Ctg. Samity Jalaluddin Ahmed presided over the meeting and introduced the president and general secretary candidates of the ensuing election Jahangir Alam Khan and Md. Zakaria respectively before the members present.

Indian Naval Ship arrived with 1000 MT of rice

Another Indian Naval Ship “Ghariyal  with relief materials for the affected people of the tropical cyclone Sidr, Bangladesh arrived at Chittagong port on Sunday.
The INS Ghariyal with 124 sailors and officers carrying 1040 metric tons of rice berthed at   the Chittagong port jetty at around 312 am. It may be mentioned here that INS Ghariyal earlier came to Chittagong port on 12 December 1st time with relief materials.
Representative of Assistant Controller of Food   received the food grains after handing over all relevant documents by the local agent of the Assistant High Commission of India.
In keeping with India’s close ties and empathy to the friendly people of Bangladesh continued to send relief materials in the wake of extensive loss of lives and devastation caused by cyclone Sidr.

Mahbub’s sorrow: His birthday will never be celebrated in his birthplace In presence of him

Luckily hero of the language movement and linguist Mahbub-ul-Alam could celebrate his 80th birthday. But the sorrow is that his birthday will never be celebrated in the years to come in presence of him in his birthplace as he is no more with us.

Eid-ul-Azha celebrated amidst spirit of sacrifice

Holy Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of the Muslims was celebrated in the city and elsewhere in the district on Friday amidst a spirit of sacrifice and with great enthusiasm.

CA  returns today

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed is scheduled to return home today (Monday) morning after performing the holy hajj.
Earlier, on December 16, he left Dhaka for Jeddah en route Makkah, UNB reports from Dhaka.
The Chief Adviser was accompanied by his wife Neena Ahmed, Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed and his wife Naznin Moeen and together performed the hajj.
After performing hajj, Dr Fakhruddin and his entourage went to Madinah to make ziarah at the holy Rawja Mubarak of Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (SM) and offered prayers at the Masjid-e-Nabbi.

Nora Ali arrives to help children affected by  Sidr

Bangladesh origin America’s Junior Miss Nora Ali arrived here yesterday (Sunday) at the invitation of Kachi Kanther Asor to stand by the deprived children and help them educate.
She is the daughter of Zaki and Mahfuza Ali and attended South St. Paul High School in Mendonta Heights.
Nora, 18, was awarded the title of America’s Junior Miss 2007 at the 50th Annual America’s Junior Miss National Finals on June 30 in Mobile, Ala, UNB reports from Dhaka.

Pro-Thaksin win puts army on back foot

The party backing ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra easily won the most seats in Sunday's election, a stunning rejection of the coup which booted out the telecoms billionaire in 2006.
With 86 percent of the vote counted, the People Power Party (PPP) was heading for 231 seats in the 480-member parliament and said it would form a coalition government.

Attack on Saudi holy sites unearthed : Police held 28

Saudi Arabian police have arrested 28 men for allegedly planning to attack holy sites around Mecca and Medina during the recently finished Muslim hajj pilgrimage, the kingdom's Interior Ministry said Sunday. The ministry said 27 of the men were Saudi nationals and one was a foreign resident. "Thanks to God, the security forces managed to detain members of the deviated group who have links with elements outside (the kingdom) while planning to carry out criminal acts inside," a statement by the Interior Ministry statement said. Saudi authorities often use the term deviated group to describe terror suspects linked to al-Qaida
