Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed who is attending the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting has said
Bangladesh is facing two vitally important issues -- access of Bangladeshi products to the markets of developed countries, including the USA, and adapting to the impact of global warming causing changes in the climate.
"We're pointing out to the business and political leaders here formally and informally to address these vital issues," he told an international press conference at Congress Center on the sidelines of the WEF, UNB reports from Davos, Switzerland.
Dr Ahmed said, "We're not asking for favour, we're asking for rewarding good market performance." He said Bangladesh is asking for access to the US market for its garment products as it was given to African LDCs for American and some EU markets.
On the adverse impact on Bangladesh due to climate change, he said one-third of Bangladesh would go under water affecting some 40 million people with one-meter rise at the sea level. "It would be disastrous for the country if more waters flow from the Himalayan system and flow through the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers' systems."

Sarkozy in India
Attends Republican Day celebration today

AP/UNB, New Delhi

French President Nicolas Sarkozy began a two-day visit to India on Friday with a group of officials in tow. But his model-singer girlfriend, the other person everyone was looking for, was nowhere to be seen. The trip is aimed at cementing diplomatic and political links and Sarkozy, who will be the guest of honor at India's Republic Day celebrations Saturday, said in an interview published Friday that the two nations were close to reaching a deal on civilian nuclear issues. "We are on the verge of finding an agreement which will enable the development of civilian nuclear cooperation with India," he told the Hindustan Times, one of India's largest English-language newspapers. The agreement, though, rested on India concluding an agreement on nuclear safeguards with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The IAEA agreement, which would give the U.N. watchdog an overview of much of New Delhi's civilian nuclear program, would also have to be approved by the Nuclear Suppliers Group, a group of nations that export nuclear material, Sarkozy said.
Local newspapers, quoting unidentified government officials, have.

Govt blasts retired generals for criticizing Musharraf

AP/UNB, Islamabad

Pakistan's government reacted angrily Friday to an appeal by a group of retired military commandeers for President Pervez Musharraf to step down in order to promote democracy and help combat religious militancy.
Information Minister Nisar Memon described the appeal as unconstitutional, and said he was "dismayed at such lack of understanding of national issues by people who have held important positions in the past."
On Tuesday, more than 100 retired generals, admirals, air marshals, other senior officers and enlisted ranks belonging to the Pakistan Ex-Servicemen's Society released a statement urging Musharraf to resign immediately "in the supreme national interest." Memon said that rather than issuing "irresponsible press statements," the group should focus on improving the welfare of retired military personnel. The timing of the call appeared aimed at embarrassing Musharraf, who was in Europe on a tour aimed at reassuring Western leaders about his ability to restore democracy and prevail in the escalating combat between government troops and Taliban rebels along Pakistan's mountainous border with Afghanistan.
