In observance of the 59th Republic Day of India, Assistant High Commission office in Chittagong arranged a reception meeting at its Khulshi office premises last evening. Asstt High Commissioner Mr. S Bhattacharjee hosted the reception function and dinner.

Renovation of Court building to be completed by next year

Housing and Public Works Adviser Ghulam Quader yesterday said that renovation of the century old Chittagong court building will be completed by 2009.
The existing century-old Chittagong courthouse will be completely facelifted for use, keeping its infrastructure and architectural design intact, Quader told reporters after inspecting ongoing renovation works of the courthouse.

 

Debashis promises to work for implementing CHT peace treaty

Special assistant on Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs Raja Debashis Roy has said as a responsible person of
the present government, his job is to work for implementing the CHT Peace Agreement without infringing anyone's rights in the region, inhabited by indigenous and mainland people.
"I do not see any harmful element in the agreement for either the government and the citizens. So, as a responsible person of the ministry, I should work to advance the implementation process of the deal," he said in a view-exchange meeting with journalists at the press club here Saturday, UNB reports from Chittagong.

Jamuna Bank holds blood donation program

Former lawmaker, industrialist and chairman of the bank, Alhaj Nur Mohammed and Shakawat Abu Khair Mohammed, industrialist, Chief of Robintax Group and director of the bank were present as Chief Guest and Special Guest respectively.

Unusual rainfall, life paralysed

The civic life in the port city and adjoining areas have almost paralyzed due to light to moderate rainfall that started to experience since the small hours of yesterday . Life here in the port city was disrupted to large extent today following total disappearance of the sun behind thick clouds backed by seasonal nippy wind and non stop drizzling since morning . The icy breeze coupled with ceaseless drizzling hard hit floating and day labourers squeezing job market in particular. The drizzling accompanied by the gusty wind and cold spell crippled the city life and forced the city residents to stay inside the house especially in the last day of the weekend.Local Met office recorded 39 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours ending 3 :00 pm yesterday

CA returns home after attending WEF conference
Emergency to be eased gradually

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed returned home this (Saturday) evening after attending the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
Earlier Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed has said the state of emergency will be eased gradually, but political parties have certain responsibilities and need to establish accountability through reforms.
"State of emergency will be relaxed gradually, but you know why the time is needed? Political parties require to establish accountability within themselves through reforms," he told a group of Bangladeshi journalists covering the annual meeting of World Economic Summit (WEF) 2008, UNB reports from Davos Switzerland.

Law Adviser AF Hassan Ariff Saturday said the government has nothing to do with the extortion case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following the statement by its complainant businessman Azam J Chowdhury.
Azam J Chowdhury on Thursday told the press that he did not file any case directly against former premier and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, UNB reports from Dhaka.
"The government has nothing to do as the case is under process in the court. Now the matter depends on the court," the Law Adviser told the media men.

Home bound devotees from Ijtema face trouble

Home bound devotees faced a lot of trouble in returning home due to inclement weather and lack of transports following sudden conclusion of Biswa Ijtema at Tongi on Friday. About 50,000 devotees were at Ijtema ground till Saturday evening.
They were waiting for availability of transport. They underwent immense suffering under the open sky and rail station during the drizzles, UNB reports from Gazipur. About 100 devotees from Middle East countries came at the Ijtema Saturday morning, as they did not receive the news of its early conclusion. They arrived at Zia International Airport Friday evening. Later, they were taken to Kakril Mosque from where they came to Ijtema ground Saturday morning.
About 6,775 devotees from 68 countries, who had come to the Ijtema will stay at Ijtema ground till today (Sunday).

R-Day: India showcases military might

New Delhi: French President Nicolas Sarkozy was guest of honour on Saturday at country's 58th Republic Day parade as New Delhi showcased its latest military hardware including nuclear-capable missiles.
Soldiers marched down the Rajpath to the sound of military bagpipes as the first woman President Pratibha Patil gazed on from behind the bullet-proof glass.
Tight security surrounded the annual parade, which highlights India's military might, technological prowess and cultural diversity and marks its proclamation as a republic in 1950 - three years after it won independence from British rule.

Pak troops launch fresh attacks against militants

Hundreds of panicked families fled an area in northwestern Pakistan where security forces pounded militants' hideouts, killing 30 of them, officials and residents said Saturday. The evacuation from Dara Adam Khel, a town in the tribal belt which lies 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the provincial capital of Peshawar, began Friday, shortly before the offensive which the authorities say was launched against militants who hijacked four truckloads of military supplies a day earlier.
Two paramilitary troopers also died and 10 were wounded in Friday's clashes around Dara Adam Khel, located along a key strategic route linking Pakistan's northwestern frontier with the rest of the country, according to an army statement. Iftikhar Afridi, 34, told reporters in Peshawar that he had walked for nearly 10 kilometers (six miles) with his wife and six children before he found a passenger bus to take them to the city.
