CPA plans borrowing container handling equipments

Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), in its latest move to address ever-increasing demand, has planned to borrow heavy equipments like straddle carriers for its under-construction yard - Port Park yard.
The CPA, at the same time, has planned to procure fifteen forklifts mostly to address the future demand, which will be utilized for Port Park yard, the CPA officials said.
This is for the first time, the CPA innovated a unique idea of borrowing, simply to avoid hassle of equipments procurement, a lengthy process, and to run the port activities unhindered by minimizing costs, according to the CPA officials.
The CPA is already using different equipments on rent-basis but this time the supplier company will shoulder the whole responsibility of provided equipments' maintenance, Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Commodore Mohammad Farooque told The Daily People's View yesterday over phone.

BSTI to set up microbiology lab in Ctg

A microbiology lab will soon be established at the regional office of Bangladesh Standard & Testing Institute (BSTI) in Chittagong, according to informed officials.
The local unit of the BSTI had long been in need of a microorganism laboratory for assessing the food grade and quality of the imported food stuffs and the substances cause hazards to public health.
The quality and quantity watchdog had been testing only a few dozen of products among over 150 for want of experts, testing devices and chemical reagents.
The government reportedly took up the initiative on the priority basis when Chittagong Customs House (CCH) opposed to spare much time for getting the reports of chemical examinations and clearance from the BSTI.

Trial of Bijoy TV graft case stayed

A special court here in the port city yesterday postponed the hearing of Bijoy TV graft case involving the Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury until April 16. Judge of the Divisional Special Court SM Solaiman ordered the postponement after defense lawyer Rezaul Karim Chowdhury produced the certified copy of the High Court's order that stayed the case's proceeding.
Meanwhile, former state minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin and his son Mir Helal Uddin were produced before the same court in a tax dodging case yesterday.

The court set February 14 as the next date for hearing the case. The court earlier dismissed the stay request from the defense lawyer Abdus Sattar without the certified copy of the high court's order.

The High Court Monday appointed a seven-member panel of amicus curiae in court's aid for disposal of detained former premier Sheikh Hasina's writ challenging government action in placing an extortion case against her under emergency rules.During the rule hearing on the writ petition today, an HC division bench comprising Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Shahidul Islam took the decision of appointing the legal aides in dealing with the stately case.

Authorities to check any letter from CA's office administrative advantages

All ministries, divisions and organizations concerned have been requested to contact the Chief Adviser's office
to be sure of any letter from the office regarding personal, financial or administrative benefit, in order to guard against any fraud.
"A vested quarter with dishonest motives, through fraudulent means, is writing forged letters related to personal or financial or administrative privileges using the name of the officials of the Chief Adviser's office and sending those to various organizations," said a release from the CA's office yesterday (Monday), UNB reports from Dhaka.

US govt provides combat gear against bird flu

The United States has donated 10,000 sets of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Bangladesh as combat gear for strengthening avian influenza prevention and control.
Each PPE set consists of coveralls, shoe covers, a respirator, goggles, an apron, and inner and outer gloves, UNB reports from Dhaka.
"PPEs are critical in protecting Government livestock officers and reducing possibilities of contamination as experts cull flocks, collect samples for verification of the H5N1 virus, and bury the infected poultry," said a news release here Monday.
The Department of Livestock Services, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, received the donation on Sunday.

Sadrists urge Shiite cleric not to extend cease-fire in Iraq

Influential members of Muqtada al-Sadr's movement have urged the anti-U.S. Shiite cleric not to extend a cease-fire when it expires next month, officials said Monday, a move that could jeopardize recent security gains. The Iraqi Red Crescent Organization, meanwhile, gave a higher death toll than Iraqi officials from last week's devastating house explosion in the northern city of Mosul.
The relief organization said more than 60 people were killed and 280 wounded based on estimates from relatives who buried victims without officially registering them. Iraqi officials in Mosul maintain that nearly 40 were killed and more than 200 wounded. Al-Sadr's August order for his feared Mahdi Army militia to freeze activities for six months was seen by U.S. commanders as a major factor in a nationwide reduction of violence.

Suharto laid to rest

Former Indonesian President Suharto, who led a military dictatorship for three decades and whose regime killed hundreds of thousands of left-wing opponents, was laid to
rest Monday at a state funeral with full military honors.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono led the ceremony, which began just before noon at the Suharto family mausoleum near the city of Solo, Suharto's hometown, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the capital.
Suharto died of multiple-organ failure Sunday, after more than three weeks on life support at a Jakarta hospital. He was 86.
