Bird flu virus found in Chittagong

After the crow, the existence of Avian Influenza Virus in chicken was confirmed in Chittagong city on Tuesday The detection of the virus prompted the authorities to focus on preventive measures and public awareness to arrest the spread of the menace. At least seven thousand broiler chickens of Karnophuli Poultry firm under city's Bakolia police station were buried today shortly after receiving the confirmation report from Savar Livestock Laboratory.

Photo: AUH DulalWith Chittagong city the deadly H5N1 strain has already spread to 37 districts, as the ongoing drive against the virus resulted in the culling of about half a million birds across the country .
District Livestock Officer Mohammed Abdul Mannan confirmed about the burial of the broiler chickens and said that more than 30 thousands of broiler chickens from different farms and houses of the bird flu virus prone area under Bakolia police station would soon be buried by turns .

Integrate youth in war against corruption : Hasan Mashhud

Chairman of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), a graft watchdog, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury yesterday urged local government officials to integrate youth folk of the country in the ongoing "war against corruption". "It's only youth who can play vital role in creating awareness in the society against corruption and awareness campaign will be more effective than imposing law," the ACC chief said.
He was addressing at an opinion exchange meeting at the auditorium of Engineers Institute Chittagong yesterday. Secretary to the ACC Mokhlesur Rahman, Director General Abu Taleb Miah and regional chief of the ACC Major Julfikar Ali Majumdar among others addressed it.
"We who have already crossed sixty years, almost involved in corruption in different degree so the youth who are grooming up can shoulder the responsibility of preventing corruption only by carrying a toll - awareness," the ACC bigwig said.
"Corruption must be rooted out from all levels of society and all should voluntarily join in the war against corruption," he told representatives of Chittagong's district and upazila corruption prevention committees.

Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad here at the port city yesterday asked the police men to work for the countrymen by wiping out their long-standing horrific and uncooperative attitude.
He also said that every police men ranging from constable to IG must have to show transparency and accountability in their daily activities.
"No need of those policemen if he or she is even Inspector General who are not friend of the people," he stressed.
He was addressing at a function to mark the foundation stone laying ceremony of RF Police Plaza, a high-rise office cum commercial building of Bangladesh Police Welfare Trust, at city's Nandon Kanon yesterday afternoon as chief guest.

Emergency must go before city polls: CEC

The Election Commission will hold polls to four city corporations and seven municipalities in April, the chief election commissioner (CEC) said Tuesday. At a ceremony at the Election Commission Secretariat, ATM Shamsul Huda said he had asked the government to take a decision on the state of emergency and indoor politics by March for the sake of the polls. Major General Shafiqul Islam, military secretary at the army headquarters, handed over a copy of a draft voter list of the four cities and seven municipalities to him at the ceremony. Election commissioner Sakhawat Hossain and Brigadier General Sahadat Hossain were present at the ceremony.

Model PSC for oil, gas exploration okayed

The interim cabinet Tuesday approved a newly drafted production sharing contract meant to guide a new phase of exploration for oil and gas in the Bay of Bengal. In a meeting at the Chief Adviser's Office, the council of advisers gave the thumbs-up to the updated version of the contract titled, "Model Production Sharing Contract". The approval means some vital changes are imminent to the previous practices in awarding contracts for exploring and managing oil and gas fields.
Energy secretary Mohammad Mohsin said by phone that they would immediately invite proposals for what would be the third round bidding for exploration in Bangladesh's waters. Under the new PSC, a company that would win the bid for any deep sea field would initially strike a deal for five years while for field in the shallow part the initial term would be of four years. The new document also abolishes a previous practice under which official oil and gas agency Petrobangla used to pay corporate taxes to the government on behalf of the exploration firm.

Anti-corruption campaigns have to be in fair manner : Geeta Pasi

US charge de affaires Geeta Pasi Tuesday said the anti-corruption campaigns launched by the caretaker government have to be carried out in a fair and transparent manner failing which investors might get nervous as to whether their ventures would be subject to investigation too.
"The caretaker government has also tackled corruption. A long- term decline in corruption will give business the confidence to invest in Bangladesh," the US envoy, however, said about the positive dimension of the purge in the interim period, UNB reports from Dhaka.
She made the remarks while speaking at a license-awarding ceremony organized in Gulshan this morning on the occasion of awarding licenses to two Bangladeshi spinning mills - Square Spinnings Limited and Malek Spinning Mills Limited - by The Cotton Council International USA.

US troops kill 15 militants in Iraq

Fifteen suspected militants were killed Monday in U.S. raids targeting a meeting location and possible hide-out for a senior al-Qaida in Iraq leader northeast of Baghdad, the military
said.
The fighting began after gunmen inside two buildings opened fire on American forces who were acting on intelligence about an area believed to be an al-Qaida meeting location "and possible bed down location for a senior leader of the network," according to a statement, which added that three militants were killed in the initial engagement.
